The health care profession in general and the nursing profession specifically is in need of qualified candidates with a solid education.

Women dominate in the field of nursing and, while there are many scholarships available for females, male nursing scholarships are few and far between.

There are limited scholarships available and, as a result, men will need to get creative if they want to enter a nursing program and receive financial assistance.

Nursing Scholarships Just For Males

There are three notable sources of educational scholarship funds solely for men. The American Assembly for Men in Nursing has formed three scholarships though generous gifts from individuals as well as corporations.

AAMN Johnson & Johnson Scholarship

Offering $1,000 to male nursing students based on proven accomplishments, this scholarship was started in 2004. This fund provides twenty scholarships annually but only when funds are sufficiently available. Recipients must maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA and be enrolled in a pre-RN program.

Jadeh Moore Student Nurse Essay Contest

The winner of this contest must be a Pre-RN male student and enrolled in a program that will lead to NCLEX-RN eligibility. He will receive $500 for writing the best response to a question posed by The American Assembly for Men in Nursing.

IStudySmart.com Scholarship

This scholarship is geared toward males who are seeking their Associate in Nursing Degree from Excelsior College through the school’s distance learning program.

Getting Creative: Other Nursing Scholarships For Men To Consider

There are other options for men other than the few exclusive male-only scholarships available. If you are a man pursuing a nursing degree, consider that there are many scholarships that are given to minorities, regardless of their gender.

National Association of Hispanic Nurses

Recipients of this scholarship are a select group of Hispanic students who demonstrate promise of future professional contributions to the nursing profession and who have the potential to act as role models for other aspiring nursing students.

They also offer several awards including the Ildaura Murillo-Rohde Award for Education Excellence, the Henrietta Villaescusa Community Service Award and the Janie Menchaca Wilson Leadership Award to honor Hispanic nurses throughout the country. National Black Nurses Association

For those already working toward their nursing degree, up to $2,000 per scholarship is available to black nursing students with glowing recommendations from faculty as well as evidence of noteworthy extracurricular activities.

National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations

This association administers the AETNA Scholarship and has the goal of increasing the number of ethnic minority nurses and socializing them into the research agenda to eliminate health disparities.

To be considered, you must be a member of the association, must be attending or making application to a four-year degree program or master’s degree program, provide a letter of reference, and have demonstrated leadership and involvement in the ethnic community.

Philippine Nurses Association of America Scholarship

The recipient of this scholarship is a graduate student working toward a Master’s Degree or Doctorate in nursing.

They award $1,000 per year to each eligible recipient. The applicant must have evidence of current enrollment and/or admission to an accredited Master’s or Doctoral Program, be a member of the Philippine Nurses Association of America, Inc., and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.

National Alaska Native American Indian Nurses Association

This scholarship is available for students who are NANAINA members and enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate nursing program in an accredited or state-approved school of nursing. They must also be enrolled in a US Federal or State-recognized Tribe.

More Competitive Scholarship Options For Males

There are no rules that say that men cannot apply for and win valuable scholarships that are open to all nursing students regardless of gender or ethnicity.

The Emergency Nurses Association is notable for the fact that they award dozens of scholarships annually and around one-third of them have gone to men. The categories include undergraduate, graduate, non-RN, and post-graduate scholarships. They range from $2,000 per scholarship up to $10,000.

The ENA Foundation was established in 1991 with the mission of providing educational scholarships and research grants in the discipline of emergency nursing. Applicants must be an ENA member for at least twelve months, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and must be attending a NLN or AACN accredited school.
