We, as Americans, should consider ourselves very fortunate for the abundance of opportunities at our feet each and every day.
We have the freedom to do just about anything within reason. We elect our own leaders, practice any religion desirable, and take charge of finding our own career paths and opportunities to receive the best education possible.
In New York there are plenty of scholarship and grant programs for aspiring nursing students. It is important to know your options concerning your education and your money, or lack thereof.
The first thing you should know is that there are several different types of scholarships. These include:
- Need-Based: These are awarded based on a family’s financial situation, expected family contribution, and overall cost to attend the desired school.
- Student-Specific: Minority scholarships are most common in this category. They can also be awarded according to ethnicity, religion, gender, and family and medical history, just to name a few. Any award given based on these student-specific situations fits into this category.
- Career-Specific: Awards scholarships to those students dedicated to a certain field of study. Most often given to those shadowing a demanding career such as nursing or education. The degrees mentioned here will fall into this category.
- Merit-Based: Scholarships based upon student’s abilities. Athletic scholarships are very common, along with academic or artistic-related scholarships. It also helps to have an impressive background with plenty of community service experience and extracurricular activities. An exceptional ACT or SAT score can also score you a merit-based scholarship.
In New York, not only is there a wealth of opportunity to find any of these scholarships, but also plenty of nursing grants and scholarships to excel those in need of proper education to take on one of America’s hardest jobs.
